The law firm of Buckley & Zopf is a general practice firm serving Sullivan County, west-central New Hampshire and the Upper Valley since 1946. There are three full time attorneys in the firm: Anthony F. DiPadova, Alexander W. Scott, and Melvin T. Diep who have approximately fifty-five years of legal experience collectively. Buckley & Zopf TeamGeorge Zopf and Robert Buckley founded the firm in 1946. Both of them attended Harvard Law School, served in the Judge Advocates Corps during World War II and after their discharge from the military they opened their office in Claremont. The continued use of their names is out of respect for their many years of valued service to their clients and community. They created a legacy and reputation for excellence which continues to this day. We continue to provide individualized, quality, effective and prompt legal services to individuals, businesses and municipal organizations in both civil and criminal matters.

Tony DiPadova

Anthony F. DiPadova, Jr


As a partner in the law firm of Buckley and Zopf, Tony brings more than 30 years of trial experience.  Raised in Sunapee, New Hampshire, Tony attended Keene State College, where he graduated cum laude, in 1984.  He attended New England School of Law in Boston where he graduated magna cum laude in 1987. While in law school Tony served as the managing editor of the New England Law Review.  From 1987 to 1988 Tony served as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Justices of the New Hampshire Superior Court.

Tony has been in the private practice of law since 1988 concentrating his practice in the areas of Criminal Defense, DUI/Motor Vehicle Defense, Domestic Relations, Personal Injury and Civil Litigation. Tony has handled many cases in the District and Superior Courts of New Hampshire including civil, personal injury, criminal and domestic cases.  He has also argued several cases before the New Hampshire Supreme Court, including State v. Lorton,‑supreme‑court/1473964.html an often cited case establishing the level of proof required for a DUI/DWI conviction.

Tony is a member of the American Bar Association,   the New Hampshire Bar Association,  the New Hampshire Association for Justice,  and the New Hampshire Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys .

Tony resides in Claremont, New Hampshire with his wife Judy.  In the past Tony has served on many local boards, including the Orion House, the Newport Opera House, Chairman of the Newport Zoning Board ,  the Community Alliance of Human Services and is a past president of the Newport Rotary Club.  Tony is currently active with the Claremont Kiwanis Club raising funds for children’s charities. Tony is also an avid runner and hiker, having completed ten marathons including the Boston Marathon as well as completing the Mount Washington Road Race twice and is currently working on completing the list of New Hampshire’s 48 peaks over 4,000 feet.

Alex Scott

Alexander W. Scott


Alex has been serving the citizens of Sullivan County since 1990.  Alex began trying cases in the District Courts as a police prosecutor starting in 1994 and as an attorney in the District and Superior Courts starting in 1998.  Prior to joining Buckley & Zopf, Alex was most recently an Assistant County Attorney at the Sullivan County Attorney’s Office and an Attorney at the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office.  Alex focused on criminal litigation and criminal appeals.

Alex served as the Police Chief for the City of Claremont from 2003 to 2017.  Alex was the youngest known Chief to take on this challenge and in 2004 was named to the Union Leader’s annual Top 40 Under Forty.  During his tenure he represented the City in criminal matters and assisted the City Solicitor with civil cases, collective bargaining, contract drafting, municipal code drafting, code enforcement, and landlord/tenant issues.

Alex was appointed to Governor John Lynch’s Judicial Selection Committee and served thereon from 2004 to 2012.  Alex was an instructor of Constitutional Law for the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council and taught at River Valley Community College and Norwich University.

Alex grew up in Springfield, New Hampshire.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Norwich University, magna cum laude, in 1992 and attained the rank of Sergeant First Class in the Corp of Cadets.  He attended U.N.H. School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce Law Center) where he graduated in the top twenty percent of his class in 1998.  Alex has been a member of the New Hampshire Bar since 1998.  While in law school, Alex worked for the Concord, New Hampshire law firms of Cleveland, Waters and Bass, P.A. and Rath, Young and Pignatelli, P.A.  While at Rath, Young and Pignatelli, Alex co-authored an article for the New Hampshire Bar Journal with Attorney Ann McLane Kuster, “Is Your Mama a Llama” The Brave New World of Reproductive Technology, March 1998, Volume 39, Number 1.  After graduation, Alex served as the Assistant Sullivan County Attorney from 1998 to 2003.

Alex and his wife Kathy live in Claremont and when they aren’t at work they are likely hiking, skiing, cycling, swimming, playing field hockey or camping with their two daughters.

Alex Scott

Melvin T. Diep

Melvin began his legal practice in Maryland, handling real estate and commercialdisputes for a local firm. He soon gained a strong reputation as the lead trial attorney for one of the largest property agencies Maryland. In his young legal career, he has represented some of the Metro D.C. area’s most renowned real estate investors and property management companies in collections, evictions, and civil rights disputes.

Melvin obtained his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and his B.M.A. in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

Melvin lives in the Upper Valley with his wife, Rebecca. When not in the courtroom, Melvin and Rebecca are often climbing, hiking, or skiing in the White Mountains.

MIke Fuerst

Michael A. Fuerst


Michael Fuerst is a partner in the law firm of Buckley and Zopf in Claremont, New Hampshire where his areas of practice include estate planning, elder law, Medicaid, real estate, business formations and commercial transactions, municipal law and zoning. Mike has 40 years of legal experience.  Prior to entering private practice he worked for New Hampshire Legal Assistance  for eight years. He received a B.A. degree, cum laude, from Colgate University and a J.D. degree from Case Western Reserve University.  He is a member of the Elder Law Section of the New Hampshire Bar  and the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and its New Hampshire Chapter. He is also a member of the New Hampshire Council of School Attorneys.   He was on the Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts Committee (IOLTA) 2002‑2009 and has been on the Legislative Committee of the Bar from 1985‑1989, Ethics Committee 1991‑1993, Fee Dispute Committee 1993‑1998 and a Governor of the New Hampshire Bar Association from 1996‑1998.  He is a current member of the Board of Trustees of Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont as well as its past Chair.  He is a board member of the Office of Public Guardian . He has served on many non‑profit boards over the years, including the Community Alliance of Human Services  and West Central Services. Mike has held many presentations on elder law, long‑term care planning, estate planning, for  members of the Bar, estate planning councils and civic groups.  He is an approved attorney and agent for First American Title Insurance Company.

Mike resides with his wife  in Cornish New Hampshire where he has lived for the past 40 years. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio.  He is an avid mountain biker, road rider and back country skier. Mike currently is retired as of July, 2019 and is available of counsel as needed.

The Law Firm of Buckley and Zopf is proud to have the most experienced legal staff in Sullivan County.  Our staff, with a combined total of 100 years experience, is courteous, friendly and  knowledgeable in all areas of the law in which we practice.

Jennifer Desilets:   Jen is our longest serving employee and  has been with Buckley & Zopf for 42 years.  She began her legal career here as secretary to founding partner Robert Buckley, Sr.  She is currently secretary to Senior Partner Michael Fuerst.

Amy Belaire:   Amy has been with Buckley & Zopf for 13 years.  She is currently secretary to Anthony DiPadova and Alexander Scott.

Debbie Aumand:   Debbie has been with Buckley and Zopf for 41 years.  Debbie is recently retired but continues to work part time on probate matters.  Debbie was formerly secretary to now retired Senior Partner R. Wells Chandler.

Holly Tenney: Holly has been with Buckley and & Zopf since 2016.  Holly is our real estate paralegal and works closely with all the attorneys on real estate matters.


The law firm of Buckley and Zopf was founded in 1946 by Robert B. Buckley and George E. Zopf.  Both had served during World War II in the Judge Advocate General Corp.  After the war they settled in Claremont and began a tradition of providing excellent legal services to the residents of Sullivan County and west central New Hampshire.  A tradition of legal excellence which continues to this day.   The firm was originally located on Pleasant Street in Claremont, New Hampshire.  In 1972, the firm moved into the present location on Broad Street.

In 1974 R. Wells Chandler joined the firm and practiced with Buckley & Zopf for 38 years.  Wells headed up the firm as Senior Partner for more than 15 years prior to his retirement in July of 2012.  Michael Fuerst joined the firm in 1990 and now serves as Senior Partner.  Anthony DiPadova, Jr. joined the firm in 2000, after having practiced law in Newport, New Hampshire for 12 years. Alexander W. Scott is the firm’s newest attorney.  Alex comes from the Sullivan County Attorneys’ Office where he served as Assistant County Attorney.  Alex has also served the citizens of New Hampshire as Attorney at the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office and also served as Chief of Police of the City of Claremont.
